“I want to die. I must die. Life gestates sin.”

The decline of Kazuko class in Japan, which started at the beginning of the 20th century, reached its end two years after the end of the Second World War. The emperor abdicated his divinity, and the empire transmuted into a normal nation. The Japanese people now had to confront a new world markedly different from their chauvinist past, with the culture frontline being eroded and challenged.

No Longer Human is the struggle of the protagonist who comes from an eminent family. He flinches between life and death, candor and hatred, self-deprecation and self-righteousness. He typifies the character of the Showa period of Japan.
