And time yet for a hundred indecisions,

And for a hundred visions and revisions…

—— The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, T. S. Eliot

This is the year of 1995.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, the TV anime, portrays the psyche of a young man in the Heisei era against the backdrop of the collapse of the bubble economy: unwillingly steering the gargantuan machinery, under the pressure of parents, battling against mosters, complying for the sake of approbation, soliciting fantasy and dependence from strangers, self-critiquing yet ruefully relapsing… Hideaki Anno decides to demonstrate his authorship after four years of decadency.

The author refuses to stop at merely cultural diversity, descriptive psychological details, nuanced conversations, and exquisite actions, all of which have made the work incisive and astonishing.

This time we will be appreciating a revised version that features active protagonists and pellucid storylines. Anno’s efforts of self-improvement will never end.
